FLY Youth Dance Fest
FLYworks encourages schools and other community organizations to support youth dance programs for their students by offering workshops, lecture/demonstrations, and dance training videos to help them with their programs. But we asked ourselves, "Once a program is established, where can these dance teams perform? Where they can be seen on a theatrical stage, with lights and good sound, for a large appreciative audience of their peers and Houston's dance community?" Believing that there were too few opportunities for a true theatrical experience, FLYworks decided that it should make sure that there was such an opportunity.
FLYworks Hosts Dance Festivals
Annually FLYworks will host the FLY Youth Dance Fest in a Houston-area theater. Each participating dance group will have a chance to present its work in a professional theatrical setting. This will be a chance for groups to see and be seen, to discuss dance, to learn from each other, and, it is hoped, to be inspired to take their art to a higher level.
Who Can Participate?
The festival is open to youth programs anywhere. Elementary, middle, and high school programs.
Accommodating Dance Programs at All Levels of Development
To accommodate dance programs at all levels of development, there will be two groups. One group will consist of dance programs chosen from submitted performance videos. This group will perform on the festival's finale gala concert. All other dance programs will be accepted in the order applications are received. In this second group, the primary objective is to give those dancers the experience of an on-stage, public performance in a theater for an appreciative audience. The purpose is to create a dance forum--a gathering of dance enthusiasts showing their work and sharing ideas.
Spring 2008: The First Annual FLY Youth Dance Fest
FLYworks is planning the first festival for the spring of 2008. The plan is still in the formative stage. We welcome comment from dance teachers, dance program leaders, and dance team leaders. The first festival is planned to be a one-day event. However, if response justifies it, the festival could become a multi-day event.
